Ride into the Gap!

Okay, well many of you may not be old enough to remember when it was hard to distinguish The Gap from Miller's Outpost (which became Anchor Blue and went out of business this month). But, The Gap decided to go for a more refined look and left Miller's in the dust. The Gap now brings a certain sense of safe, affordable style to buyers.

In 2008, I posted about the scooter boxers that they sold. I bought 2 pairs of those for my BF. Now, pal Nancy D. alerts me to some cool baby clothes with scooters on them. While one body suit (below) looks classic, the other items look more like modern Vespas.

Holiday Gift: Department 56 Village Scooters

Every time I go by the Department 56 displays in stores I wonder why they don't have scooters. Well, it seems that they introduced scooters in 2008, but I never saw them, or my local stockists just didn't order them. Too bad for them-- they could have taken me for some serious money.

The Village Scooters are still available from Department 56 retailers. Two scooters for $20. If you have one in your ton, ask them to order them for you. or you can go to the website and be directed to online retailers that sell them.

 

One of the online retailers is Bronners who also sells this modern scooter ornament (but calls it a moped in the description, dernit). 

Holiday Gift: Hello Lucky Letterpress Cards

I guess it's time to start the scooterist holiday gift guide. Some say that Nov. 2 is too early, but many of my picks may need to be ordered for delivery, so it's never to early to start! Today's suggested gift are stationery items from Hello Lucky! The company is run by two sisters who are based in San Francisco. While they previously had some other items with scooters on them, they currently sell:

I'm in love with this Boogie on a Scooter calendar by Lili Chin. It is her art of her Boston Terrier on a a variety of scooters. Readers of my blog may recall that one of my wishes is to have my own dog who rides on my scooter, so you know I am totally into this calendar. Paul Frank Scooter Swag

If you read the print version of Scoot! you may recall seeing an ad for Paul Frank stationery items. I interviewed the actual Paul Frank (before his namesake company dismissed him) waaay back in Scoot! issue # 19 (we're on 58, now!) and he was pleasant and charming. He said that while he had never owned a scooter, he admired the SoCal kids that rode them and he used the motif in his artwork. Paul Frank Industries continues to periodically use scooters. The only way that I could get my hands on this Tiffany Scooter Charm that starts at $175 alone and goes up to $1,075 if you get it with a necklace, would be to have Santa get it for me. =wishful thinking= Thanks to Norbert and Tammy for tipping me off to this.

Stopped by the TAD Gear store in San Francisco and got a cute backpack for my Rocket World rhino.





Also noticed that the store sells plain white versions that you can customize yourself. $65





TAD Gear sells all kinds of cool "survival" gear (for lack of a better word). You can pick up comfy khaki clothing, knives, fire sparkers and multi-tools for your next outdoor adventure. The store is owned by Patrick Ma who has contributed artwork to past Scoot! art issues and created the Rocket World I.W.G. Squad toys  shown above. The store is on 22nd st. near Illinois.

Rocket World will be at Comic-Con debuting limited edition Star Trek-themed figurines next week.

Julius & Clancy in Legos

If you saw the #55 April 2010 issue of Scoot!, you may have seen the incredible Lego creation by Canadian Lego enthusiast, Paul Hetherington. He created Paul Frank Industries' Julius the monkey and Clancy the giraffe riding in a scooter.

If you are a casual Lego user or (like me) haven't picked up Legos since childhood, you are probably in awe at how he was able to recreate these very recognizable characters.  Also, the details are quite impressive.
