The Giro in Vespa is a time trial competition, where riders are required
to complete a road course in as close as possible to a prescribed time,
with penalties given based on the number of minutes that a rider is faster or slower than that time.
Riders who wish to compete in the Giro will need to register in advance; full details available at classicomotoitalia.com.
The Giro will consist of two classes: Vintage Class (of 25 years or older); and Modern Class (24 years and newer).
Vespa, Lambretta, Italjet, Aprilia, Heinkel or whatever else! Two-wheels are two wheels, so bring it.
Got a moto you wanna run? You can - you just won't get points for competition.
The laps will be approximately 50miles in length and based on a Giro d'California rules:
Get there in a certain time or get dinged with points (if you arrive early or late).
The rider with the least amount of points wins. Forget cheating on the route - we'll know if you did or not.

Lunch will be served at the park, after the first Giro circuit has been completed.
The second half will commence after everyone has eaten and participants are ready to get back in the saddle.

New Motorcycle Noise Law in CA

California has new statewide law governing motorcycle sound
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- A new California law requires street motorcycles registered in the state and built on or after Jan. 1, 2013, to have an exhaust system label certifying the motorcycles meet federal sound limits, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.
On Sept. 28, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law Senate Bill 435, sponsored by Sen. Fran Pavey (D-Agoura Hills). While motorcycle manufacturers have been complying with the federal law since it was effective in 1983, the new law now makes it a state crime to operate any motorcycle registered in the state that was built on or after Jan. 1, 2013, that doesn't have a federal Environmental Protection Agency exhaust system sound emissions label.
In addition, the law requires aftermarket exhaust systems made on or after Jan. 1, 2013, to display the EPA sound emissions label, and therefore applies to individuals who seek to replace the exhaust system on affected streetbikes.

Thousands of motorcyclists utilized the AMA website at AmericanMotorcyclist.com first to oppose the bill, and then to urge Schwarzenegger to reject it.
AMA Western States Representative Nick Haris expressed major concerns about the new law.
"Many EPA labels are very difficult to locate on motorcycles," Haris said. "This law could lead to a flurry of tickets for motorcyclists who have legal exhaust systems with EPA labels on their machines that can't be easily seen. It's unreasonable to expect a law enforcement officer to easily locate an EPA label, and it's simply unfair to expect a motorcycle owner to partially dismantle an exhaust system along the roadside to prove the label exists."
Violators face fines of up to $100 for a first offense and up to $250 for subsequent offenses. Judges have the discretion to dismiss the fine for first-time offenders if the violation is corrected.
Also, a violation is considered a secondary offense, meaning a police officer can't stop a motorcyclist solely because the officer believes the motorcyclist is breaking the sound emissions label law.
"Requiring that a motorcycle display a readily visible EPA label isn't the appropriate way to address concerns about excessive motorcycle sound, which the AMA has pointed out repeatedly," Haris said. "The only objective way to determine whether a motorcycle complies with sound laws is for properly trained personnel to conduct sound level tests using calibrated meters and an agreed-upon testing procedure."
In 1972, Congress passed the federal Noise Control Act, which required the EPA to set sound standards for a number of products. It took several years, but the EPA eventually wrote rules affecting all new motorcycles sold in the U.S. beginning in 1983.
Those regulations, which still stand today, required that all street-legal motorcycles be limited to 83 decibels at that time, with a stricter, 80-decibel limit imposed beginning in 1986.
The AMA has long maintained a position of strong opposition to excessive motorcycle sound. In September 2009, the AMA developed model legislation for use by cities and states seeking a simple, consistent and economical way to deal with sound complaints related to on-highway motorcycles within the larger context of excessive sound from all sources.
The model legislation offers an objective method to evaluate motorcycle sound based on the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) J2825 standard, "Measurement of Exhaust Sound Pressure Levels of Stationary On-Highway Motorcycles." Land-Speed Record Competition for Scooters
For those of you that are interested in fast scooters, scooter racing, or speed tuning scooters, the Motor-Scooter International Land-Speed Federation may be of interest. A group of scooterists has come together to test their scooters with a simple race against the clock at El Mirage Dry Lake near Barstow, CA.
Since most land-speed racing events are closed to scooters (MSILSF cites the 5-inch wheel requirement of The Southern California Timing Association as an example) the scooterists formed their own association just for scooters. Their first annual event is November 21st, 2010. They are also trying to get a scooter class in the 2011 BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
If you are interested in testing your scooter, the fees are small, the safety requirements are basic and the scooter classes are plenty. Check it out!

Jeeze it's been a long wet winter, now the sun is out and we're ready to ride!
This year we are going to try things a little different. We are going to hold our shop rides on the first Saturday every month and alternate between stores. That way people can plan ahead and we can see more of our Oakland/Berkeley friends!
Starting Saturday April 3rd at 11 am we will hold our first ride of 2010 at Vespa Walnut Creek! May 1st at 11 AM will be our first ride originating from Rockridge Two Wheels!
The June 5th ride will be a combination of both shops meeting up and taking a long and beautiful ride down to Sunol and beyond if ya like! You don't wanna miss that one, it's a fantastic ride! More info later.
The events calendar on the website will be updated frequently, and we strongly suggest joining our Facebook pages to get current updates on ride information, routes, weather, and whatever. There is talk of doing a few informal Sunday rides too and they will announced on our Facebook pages only. If you're not sure what Facebook is, or not a member, you can always ring the shop in WC for updates.
Rides are based on the capabilities of the 150cc engine, smaller engines may struggle on the hills and faster portions of the rides. Suggestions for routes or events are always appreciated, just drop us an email or post on Facebook.

Do Bats ♥ Motorscooters?
I have heard two different people remark that bats have followed them when riding their scooters. One was riding a two-stroke scooter in the hills of Italy at dusk. The other was riding a four-stroke modern bike around a parking lot in California at dusk. Coincidence?
Bats have a fine-tuned sense of hearing, but does the loud engine of a scooter attract them? Do the enjoy huffing scoot exhaust? have polled several bat experts, but without specifics such as what species the bats were, many of them cannot give me a definitive answer.

April 20, 2009 — Burbank, CA — On April 30th, singer/songwriter Jason Reeves will gather his friends and fellow musicians Brendan James and Amber Rubarth and embark on The Vespa Experiment, a two-week tour of the California coastline during which they hope to raise awareness about global warming. The three artists will leave behind the concrete jungle of Los Angeles and ride Vespas up the Coast with just the basics: camping gear, musical instruments, and a vision: to inspire young people to consider their impact on their environment.
“It seems like back in the late 60s and early 70s, people turned to folk singers and songwriters for inspiration and answers to difficult questions,” Reeves says. “We were very motivated by that idea and hope to influence a new generation to become more environmentally aware as they grow up and take command of their future.”
To that end, the artists have linked up with Greenpeace, who have come on board as a partner to help deliver their message. Greenpeace volunteers will be present at events to engage attendees and urge people to take action to protect the natural beauty of the West from the devastating impacts of global warming. It is critical that Californians act now to protect the state’s beautiful forests, coastal areas and farmlands.
Attendees will take action at the concert by signing a giant postcard banner, writing letters, and making phone calls to local Representatives, urging them to be bold in their support for global warming solutions in Congress this year.
The artists chose Vespas to focus attention on the positive and immediate environmental impact of scooters as personal transportation. “If the 69% of Americans who own two or more cars would just switch one set of four wheels for two, the reduction in fuel consumption, emissions, congestion and cost would be significant – not years from now, but right now,” said Paolo Timoni, President and CEO, Piaggio Group Americas. “Even if Americans were to switch just 10% of their total mileage to scooters, they would consume 14 - 18 million gallons less fuel per day and carbon dioxide emissions could be reduced by 324 million pounds per day.”
As Reeves, James and Rubarth travel north, they will be accompanied by a photographer and film crew, who will document their journey as they perform at clubs, park amphitheaters, mountaintops, and campgrounds along their route; engaging with fans and leading discussions about the environment, and even leading songwriting sessions with community activists and kids from local schools. The footage and photographs will be edited into webisodes to be posted on each of the artists’ websites and at www.myspace.com/TheVespaExperiment enabling fans to follow the artists’ adventures as they unfold and communicate with their peers about what they are seeing.

Vespa Items at Napastyle stores
Celeb chef Michael Chiarello has his own catalog and retail store called Napastyle. I walked through his store this weekend and saw that it carries some Vespa items such as the fenderlight clock, pen set, notebooks and even a two wallhangings. I didn't have my iPhone with me, so I couldn't take pictures. I checked the store's website & didn't find them there either. So, if you live near one of his few California stores stop by and check them out.

It has been a few years since I attended a Worshiping the Beast rally, but it's nice to see that the river boat is back. If you are within driving distance to Sacramento, CA hangout with the wonderfully fun Burgundy Topz scooter club. Those boys are great!

Classico Moto Italia May 4-6, San Jose
I used to be a member of Vespa Club Los Gatos one of the oldest continuing scooter clubs in the US. But with work, a magazine and other obligations, I figured I had better bow out rather than be a slacker member. Next month, they will host their Classico Moto Italia rally which is an appreciation of vintage Vespas. While many of the members ride newer scooters, the event is a time to bring out the old show bikes and have a good time. It is a traditional rally with the rides and day show as the main events. If you have a sweet restoration or a classy custom this is the place to show it.
Club founder, Rolf Soltau is a US scootering legend. After years of scootering, he was picked by Piaggio USA to be their training mechanic. Scooterists from all over the USA kow him from his touring for Piaggio. Also, you may have seen his numerous appearances in Scoot! sinc ehe was once the owner of the oldest known Vespa in the USA and also probably the oldest person to complete the scooter Canonball Run (2007). He's a real firecracker, and can party with scoterist 1/3 his age. If you're in the area and can make it to the rally, be sure to meet him as you won't find another scooterist like him.
