Attention Scooter Artists!
Our most recent Scooter Art issue...
I'm gathering submissions and information for our next Scooter Art issue. If you haven't seen it before, we invite artists to submit examples of artwork that uses scooters as an inspiration, or as a theme in the art. Artists that have given actual scooters an artistic treatment (such as a mural, or creating an "Art Scooter" are also invited to participate). Along with the art, we run brief artists bios and info on how to contact them. We hope that it connects artists with art buying scooterists and that it supports the scooter artists in the world.
If you are an artist that uses scooters as inspiration or if you know such an artist, let us know. Email me via the Scoot! site and select Interested in Contributing.

Cute Scooter Illustration
I remember seeing the flyer that bore these illustrations when I volunteered stuffing Scoot! magazines before our team bought the magazine. Follow the link above to visit the Nerfect site and see all of the image. You can also download desktop icons of the characters. Cute!

I hope these frames were bent...
I appreciate the idea of taking polluting vehicles off the road, but I really hope that these scooters were hopeless wrecks and not just sliced up daily riders.

Off to Comic-Con!
I'll be at Comic Con this week and out of the office from Tuesday-Tuesday. If you are one of the 140K other fans there, say hello. I'll be doin' time at the Chronicle Books both #1506, and then wandering around the show Twittering under scootmagapril. Last year one booth had a packaging box for a concept toy with a goth-style scooter. I hope that this year it is available! If you are there also look for R.Black who will be autographing & selling stuff. Also look for Patrick from RocketWorld and his kewl IWG characters who ride scooters. have one of his zipper pulls on my Scoot! sweatshirt.
I'll be on the lookout for celebs and scooter art.

No Doubt tour merchandise
The band No Doubt may not be the rocksteady neo-ska band that they used to be, but they still remember their roots with nods to that past. I read on the Nucleus Gallery website that artist Kevin Dart has created a tour poster that was inspired by the ND song, Spiderweb, and has a 60's theme. You'll see a scooter in the lower right side. According to the blog, a poster and totebag (I want that!)will be available.

Scoot! Photog in the News---NOT
Daniel Bergeron is an amazing photographer who has contributed to Scoot! several times in the past, most recently for our Carlos Alazraqui cover.
Now he is generating interest with some renegade art that combines his love of scooters with urban art.
Checkout this article in Trendhunter.
Also check out Daniel's other photographic work.
UPDATE: I sent a congrats email to Daniel and he had to break the news to me that he is not *THAT* Daniel Bergeron. There is another, and he is a photographer, and he uses scooters. So, disregard the info above. But still go ahead and go to *our* Daniel's site as he is still pretty awesome.

SHAG art for your iPhone
When I previously posted about SHAG's art for laptops, the iPhone version of it was not yet posted. I'm glad to see it now available via Infectious. I just ordered it today and will let you know how I like it once I try it out.

Vespa Items at Napastyle stores
Celeb chef Michael Chiarello has his own catalog and retail store called Napastyle. I walked through his store this weekend and saw that it carries some Vespa items such as the fenderlight clock, pen set, notebooks and even a two wallhangings. I didn't have my iPhone with me, so I couldn't take pictures. I checked the store's website & didn't find them there either. So, if you live near one of his few California stores stop by and check them out.

Custom Vespa Auction - Sept. 6th
News from our friends at Revolution Moto in Santa Rosa, CA. They donated a scooter to a local art auction. According to their newsletter:
We donated a 1974 vintage Vespa 90 to the Art Start program and Omega DiStefano completely customized it with images from the Sistine Chapel. You have to see it to believe it. The bike will be auctioned at Art Start's fifth annual "Party for Art" auction on September 6th.
The event is sure to be a blast, with entertainment by the Safaris and Dick Dale's Deltones. Tickets are only $25 and are available at RevMoto.
The Vespa is currently on display at RevMoto, in the front window. Come in, check it out, and buy a ticket for "Party for Art."
Special thanks to Mario Uribe and the tremendous team at Art Start.

Comic Con next week: you going?
I'm heading to Comic Con for my other gig, but will be hooking up with some scooter folks while I'm there. Anyone else going who wants to say hello?
I'm bringing my copy of the Scoot! Magazine scooter art issue (#40) for R. Black to sign. I forgot it when I went to his book signing...doh! also looking forward to meeting Patrick from Rocketworld who submitted art for the same issue and made those cute IWG animals on scooters figures, one of which has premium placement in my cabinet. There will be lots of other folks there to see, so I am excited.
Ed Brubaker, who has done LOTS of fancy-schmancy cool comic-related work will be there, but his Deadenders comics were closest to my heart. I interviewed him about them in Scoot! #19, I believe. Maybe I'll bring #1 with me.;)

R. Black on scooter tour
Many long-time Scoot! readers will instantly recognize R.Black's work. Most recently, he illustrated the cover of our art issue #40. He has also done ads for scooter clubs in past issues. He has now combined much of his art into a book called Art de R. Black: Futura. He's embarked upon a cool cook tour where he rides his Vespa P200 from his home in the San Francisco Bay Area to San Diego for the Comic Con convention.
One of his stops was San Jose Vespa. Josh, Jon and I showed up to get books and support his cool trip. Here are some photos:

On his trusty steed!

His tour poster.

Signing for the many folks who come to meet and greet.
If you are in the cities where he stops, make sure to say hello!

R. Black Scooterist Fave signing his book
R. Black is not only a kick-ass artist, he is also a scooterist. His work has appeared all over including Scoot! Magazine. See some examples, here. He recently published a book of his art called, Futura. He's embarking on a scooter/book tour and one of his stops is at my local Vespa Dealer, San Jose Vespa. If you are able to make it to one of his events, tell him that Scoot! sent you. ;)
From the press release about his trip:
This summer Futura artist R. Black, equipped with only a backpack of books, a pocket full of Sharpies, and a small ration of food, will wind his way down Californias historic Highway 1 on his 1979 Vespa. Making stops at scooter shops, record stores, and comic-book stores along the way before attending the San Diego Comic-Con, Black will engage fans about rock 'n' roll art and the many benefits of scooters in today's world of high gas prices.
Although a set date is yet to be determined, R. Black, along with Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli, will attempt to jump over a pool of sharks in San Diego Bay before attending a rally at Arthur's Drive-In, where Joanie Cunningham and Chachi plan to wed. If, for whatever reason, fictional or otherwise, the shark-jumping event cannot take place, fans are encouraged to catch Black at the Dark Horse booth during San Diego Comic-Con.
Known for his sharp design and sleek eroticism, Black has created posters for some of the worlds hottest bands from Bauhaus to Elvis Costello to The Black Keys. Dark Horse Books was proud to release L Art de R. Black: Futura in January 2008, which features over 100 pages of stunning, full-color images. Starting in Oakland on July 12, Black has offered to share the road with any scooter or art enthusiasts who wish to accompany him down Highway 1. To arrange a ride along with Black, fans are encouraged to send a message to Dark Horse Comics on MySpace (www.myspace.com/darkhorsecomics) where a complete list of stops and times will be available. As well, Black will be updating his progress along the way on the Dark Horse MySpace.
For those who don't know, R. Black hails from a sleepy, backwater border town called San Diego. After drifting around Japan for a couple of years attached to a small outfit called the United States Air Force he decided to call it quits and get a real job. So, he returned home and became an artist. Black got his start in 2000 doing club fliers and rock posters for his friends and their bands. After years of hard work, he achieved both a paycheck and national attention through word of mouth and strong followings in the subcultures of goth, industrial, fetish, mod, and punk. He has created posters for bands such as Ministry, Misfits, Blondie, My Morning Jacket, Billy Idol and many, many more. R. Black currently resides in Oakland where he recently finished a line of work for the prestigious Berkley Shotgun Players 2008 Season.

Cute flash homepage
I've been researching parenting & children's sites/blogs for something totally unrelated to 1) my personal life and 2) scooters, but I found this website: Enfant Terrible that has a great flash home page that has a goofy guy riding a scooter. I think I've seen him at several rallies! ha-ha! Check it out!
When you click on a link, the scooter guy appears at the top of the page. So cute! The clothes are simple (and pricey) but the flash is fun.
