This is almost scooter-related since I shot the video, the cookies were made by a scooterist and the idea for the cookie cutter was devised by another scooterist, but let's not split hairs (or get them in the dough).

New Amazon Widget: Songs to Sing While Scooting
Amazon has some cool widgets for websites. I just installed an MP3 playlist which has some of my favorite songs to sing while riding my scooter.
I have a terrible voice, even my boyfriend says so, so when I am scooting and in a great mood, I can sing out loud any song that I like. My full-face helmet keeps me hidden and no one is the wiser. However, once Jon and I tested helmet communication devices, and my secret was revealed when I forgot that he could hear me and I started to hum a song. Luckily, I hadn't broken out with "I, I, I, I, I'm so tired but I just can't lose my stride". I didn't feel so bad as he started singing, too. I bet many of you do it, too.
So, I made a mini playlist of songs that I like to sing when scooting. Check 'em out & feel free to leave a comment on which songs you like to sing.
Edwin Starr "25 Miles": when this song is played at an all-nighter, the floor is packed. It's soul-kick-alicious! It has all the elements of a great crowd pleasing dance song. If it doesn't get your foot tapping, call a hearse.
The Who "I'm Free": I feel very free when I'm having a good scootin' day.
Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose "Treat Her Like a Lady": It's sexy and has a great call-and-response and a moving beat that has you wanting to move.
Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons "Beggin'": a very passionate and effective song.
The Damned "The Shadow of Love": goth meets western in this awesome song that owes much to Rat Scabies' incessantly wonderful drumming.
I didn't have enough room to add another favorite: "Peace Frog" by The Doors.
Agree? Disagree? Got your own songs? Leave a comment!

Did you know that Vespa is an asteroid?
I read in an article about unexpected celestial body names that there is an Asteroid named after a Vespa. Lo & behold, Wikipedia confirms it. I sent an email to the Lowell observatory to see if they have any further info.

Cold Weather Challenge

I actually feel embarrassed to post about this challenge as it celebrates the tenacity of some scooterists who will defy popular opinion, and sometimes common sense, and ride in unthinkably cold weather. Why embarrassed? Because my weather has been sunny with temps hovering around 70-degrees this past week. I guess it's not my fault. Blame it on global warming, coal-fired power plants, and too many cars. ;-)
Some scooterists in the ultra-cold areas of the country (isn't that everywhere other than California right now?!?)have the stamina to brave cold-weather riding. These brave folks can participate in the Cold Weather Challenge. I cant recall how long this has been going on. But each year it is cool to see the photos that folks submit with them bundled up in front of a bank clock/temp gauge.
The rules are simple. I paraphrase: 2-wheeled scooters; 10-mile minimum ride; ambient temp, no wind-chill considered; goes 11/27/08 to 2/28/09. If you want to find out more and see the amazing results, go to The Cold Weather Challenge.
Big whoop to Colin Doyle who rode 14+ miles in -10°F in Collegeville, MN, on a Honda Ruckus 50. He posted video. I wonder if Honda designed those for such cold weather?

Traffic Calming Can be Fun!

I found this post about a new traffic calming installation which looks like a drag for cars, but might be fun for scooterists! Read about it in English atWeird Asia News.

Another thing from Comic Con...
I forgot to mention another thing I saw at Comic Con that I wanted to get! This book is sooooo cute! I don't know how to crochet, but I think it is time I did! Maybe I can make some of these and put them with the scooter listed in the post below?
Buy it from Quirk Books.

Back from Comic Con!
I just got back from a week of working Comic Con. It was fun but next year I will definitely take advantage of more panels ad events.
I scoured the exhibit hall for more scooter collectibles, but didn't really find any. I did get to meet Patrick Ma of RocketWorld who did the Insurgent Wilderness Gruppo collection of animals on scooters. He had some special one-of-a-kind smaller versions of the figures on display.

I also met Rob Reger who is the creator or Emily the Strange and Bonbon (who was a cute scooter-riding mod gal that his company Cosmic Debris no longer produces). he signed books and did drawings on each one with cool custom inscriptions. Neat!

Something totally un-scooter related... I got to meet Ryan Buell at the PopCandy party hosted by Whitney from USA Today's PopCandy blog. (I met Whitney, too, and she's a Peach!. But I was thrilled (and a little tipsy) when I met Ryan. He was kind and gracious. :)

Finally, you may remember my previous post about R. Black making his scooter journey down the coast to San Diego. Well, he made it & I caught up with him at his booth. Way to go! h said he had one minor breakdown, and it was close to NoHo scooters, so it all ended well.

Karaoke Par-tay
Last Friday night I was at the book release party for Hit Me With Your Best Shot a new book about "ultimate karaoke domination." The party was held at 7 Bamboo a San Jose karaoke bar that broadcasts the karaoke performances over the internet. I sent a shout-out to my local scooterists and told them if they rode to the event I would buy them a drink. Mike B, Lisa, Bagel, Christina and Bicycle Brian showed up and we had a blast! Here are some of the video performances of the evening:
Nim rocks Little Red Corvette!
Author Raina Lee & her boyfriend John make Islands in the Stream their own!
Bicycle Brian gets the crowd going with the House of the Rising Sun
This might be a fun event to have for the next San Jose scooter rally.

Scooter Books

I've received a few scooter books that we'll review in some upcoming issues. It got me thinking about what sort of books *haven't* been published for scooters. There are general introductions like the Idiot's Guide, and the Scooter Bible. There are maintenance manuals like Haynes & the Lambretta book. There are a few novels about scooter travel. I did an Amazon.com Listmania list a few years ago with some books in it.
What's missing? What type of books would you like to see published on scooters? I'm interested in hearing what (if any) aspects of scootering you think may be ignored.

What's the oddest thing you've found in your carb/fuel line?
My housemate had a pine needle tip in her carb which was creating running problems in her Lambretta. It reminded me about when we found a small brown moth stuffed into the cone fuel filter on my Vespa VBB. Good thing I had that fuel filter!
I posed this questions on the ScooterBBS and got some funny responses including dog hair, glass beads and shop towel fibers. Got anything stranger to share?
